Sape 'is a stringed instrument originating from Kalimantan.
Sape' is a traditional musical instrument of the Dayak Kenyah tribe and has
been around since 1350-1450. The style and way of playing of this instrument is
similar to that of a classical guitar, but it doesn't have the curves of a
guitar. The design of Sape' is expected to follow the model of the boat which
is the means of transportation for the Dayak community. The ornaments made also
contain elements of Dayak folklore. The head or ole' on traditional instruments
is usually made to resemble a hornbill (Buceros bicornis) which symbolizes
majesty. Carving dragon symbols can usually be found along the traditional
sape' or traditional Sape' front body. The number of strings or strings on this
instrument is also different from the guitar in general. Sape' initially only
had 2 strings and then developed into 3 strings. Now, this instrument already
uses 5 strings.
Sape is made of Adau wood which is found in Kalimantan. The
hallmark of this traditional musical instrument, is to display the typical
carving style of the Dayak Tribe. The carving is very dominant and fills the
surface of the musical instrument which has a length of about one meter.
A traditional musical instrument typical of Kalimantan is
similar to a guitar which has strings and is played by plucking. The strains
that come out of this instrument are very beautiful. Another interesting thing
about this traditional musical instrument from Kalimantan, is that it can be
collaborated with modern musical instruments, such as guitar, bass, drums and
keyboard.
The materials for making it are made of aro or adau wood
(cephalomappa), marong wood and pelantan wood which are commonly found in forest
areas in Kalimantan. But lately, many other types of wood are used to make
sapek, such as jackfruit wood, sana keeling, pule and so on. The wood material
is used because it has been tested for durability, lighter, not easily broken
and has good acoustic quality.
Sape is usually played to accompany various Dayak dances at
artistic celebrations filled with joy. Not only that, it is said that once this
musical instrument was also used to accompany the treatment process of someone
who was sick.
